1) Intro/
Rules/In the Style of Mondrian (part 1)
Objective: Students will create a
minimalist abstract picture in the style of Mondrian.
Materials: construction paper, Mondrian
prints, crayons, glue
Procedure: This is our first assignment
of the school year. I will discuss rules and procedures of the art room at the
beginning of class. I will spend the rest of the first class discussing
abstract art and the principles of abstract art. We will discuss the difference
s between sloppy work and abstract work. During the rest of the instructional
time we will all make a minimalist abstract picture in the style of Mondrian.
Students will draw a minimum of six lines and a maximum of 9 lines across their
paper. During the second part of the assignment (week 2) students will color
two shapes on their paper red, two yellow, and two blue. They will finish the
assignment by gluing thin black construction paper “lines” over their pencil
lines from the previous week.

3) Rule of
Halves
Objective: students will learn about the
“rule of halves” facial measurements.
Materials: examples of portraits, paper,
and pencils
Procedure: I will show students Leonardo
Di Vinci’s ideal measurements for the human face. I will then show the students
example of portraits from photographs. I will trace the faces with markers
comparing where certain faces adhere to a deviant from Di Vinci’s facial
measurements.
Assessment: There are 14 tiny steps to
drawing Di Vinci’s face. Students who draw them all get an A. Students missing
1/2 steps =B Faces missing 3-4 steps
earn a C. Missing 5 or more steps=D. refusing to do the assignment=F

foundation of a Renaissance portrait.
Materials: paper, paint trays, brushes,

Procedure: Pass out papers. give every
table their own paint trays/palettes. Fill the palettes in value order
(lightest to darkest) .
Show
students examples of how light hits the human face (up, down, left, right.)
Following a step by step demonstration, starting with a foundation color (head,
neck and ears) and later, adding highlights and shadows.
