Clay
Sarcophagu
Objective: Students will sculpt a model
sarcophagus using clay.
Materials: clay, paper, tools to stamp
patterned impressions in the clay.
Procedure: First, we will examine the
artworks and cultures of Ancient Egypt. After looking at examples of the burial
tombs and the sarcophagi of the pharaohs, the students will sculpt a sarcophagus
from clay. They will adorn the sarcophagus with different designs and patterns.
The following class period, they will design a backdrop for their clay
sarcophagus and draw it with pencils. On the third day of this assignment, the
class will paint their individual sarcophagi. On the last day of this project,
the students with finish their tomb displays by tracing their tomb backdrop
with markers and coloring it with watercolors/crayons, colored pencils.
Assessment: A=follows ALL
instructions (or does more) with great craftsmanship B=follows MOST instructions with good craftsmanship C=follows SOME instructions with good
craftsmanship D=does little work/
poor effort F=does NO work
